Weekend Food Program
The Weekend Food program is coordinated by a consortium of volunteers from Gulf Breeze and Navarre civic organizations and churches to address the problem of hunger and poor nutrition over the weekend for children from poor and economically disadvantaged families who receive free lunches.
Food packets are purchased weekly for over 450 students consisting of items like instant oatmeal, applesauce or fruit cups, breakfast bars, pudding cups, apples, oranges, tuna, ramen noodles and macaroni and cheese and are provided to the students every Friday before going home for the weekend.
Participating schools during the 2015-16 school year include Gulf Breeze Elementary School, Gulf Breeze Middle School, Gulf Breeze High School, Oriole Beach Elementary, West Navarre Primary, West Navarre Intermediate, Woodlawn Beach Middle School, Navarre High School, Holley Navarre Intermediate School and Holley Navarre Primary School.
Volunteers can assist bagging food on Monday nights at 5:15 at the Gulf Breeze Presbyterian Church or on Thursday nights at 5:15 at the Navarre First Baptist Church.
The Gulf Breeze Rotary Club has been a major contributor to the Weekend Food Program for the last five years through club donations and district grants and has partnered with the Navarre Rotary Club to expand the program. Rotarians also help order the food, pickup the food, bag the food, drop off the food at the schools, and manage the program.
